History of the Fylde Junior Golf Society

The FJGS Committee hold a letter dated 8 January 1989 which says the following:

The Junior Committee of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs have recommended that junior golf activity in the Fylde would be best developed by the formation of a Fylde Junior Golf Society.

Similar Societies were already working successfully in other districts such as East Lancs and Bury.

A meeting was arranged for 25 January 1989 at North Shore GC for the Fylde Society Captain of Captains and several members of the Lancashire Union Executive. Each club was invited to send 2 representatives to that meeting and that the Society would be made up of the 8 Fylde Golf Clubs at the time.

At that meeting they formally established the Fylde Junior Golf Soc to be run by elected officials.

Its aim

  • To encourage and develop young talent throughout the Fylde and the County.

  • To promote the game of golf at junior level throughout the Fylde.

  • To organise team matches against other societies and associations.

  • To organise a Fylde Junior Championship each year in conjunction with the Fylde Amateur Golf League.

BACKGROUND

The Society is made up of the eight to ten Fylde golf clubs, who each appoint a junior organiser, and these representatives form the basis of our committee.

The President is the immediate past Captain of the Fylde Society of Golf Club Captains.

Representatives of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs complete the committee.

The Committee meet as and when required, emails are issued by the secretary during the season with results of competitions and team events.

An AGM is held before each season at Blackpool North Shore Golf Club.

The Society is financed by donations from the participating clubs and The Society of Fylde Golf Club Captains.

ACTIVITIES

Inter Club Shield (Gross & Nett)

This is played as a stableford competition over three rounds at our various member clubs, with 5 juniors from each of the participating clubs with best 3 scores to count.

The winner of the shield will be the club with the best aggregate score over the three rounds.

There is also a Trophy for the junior with the best individual score over the three rounds

A player who is a member of more than one club must play for the club that is his or her home club.

It is the responsibility of the player to report his or her score to the Junior Organiser for any organised junior event.

In recent years we have run this competition on a stableford basis only with no gross trophy or prizes, due to the decline in low handicap players.

Presidents Day

This event is played on the President’s home course and he decides the format.

Six players represent each club with the four best scores to count.

Fylde Junior Championship

This takes place in August, each club will host in rotation.

The prizes are The Evening Gazette Trophy for the best gross and up to 2025 there was the Walter Robinson Cup for the best nett for boys. However the Walter Robinson Trophy had to be replaced due to having now worn out therefore as from 2025 there is a New Trophy and given the sad demise of our Chairman Cliff Bowman in 2024 who was hugely instrumental in Fylde Junior Golf then the New Trophy is now "The Cliff Bowman Memorial Trophy"

The Peggy Murdoch Trophy is for the girls best gross.  Also a best nett prize for a junior under 15 years of age.

Inter District Team Matches

We play a triangular friendly match against North Lancashire and East Lancs annually.

This match comprises a team of 10 players playing singles match play. This forms the pre-cursor to a Lancashire Junior team event at which all 8 Lancashire districts take part with 6 players representing each region.
